Assignment 1 - DepicT!: Feedback - 20 Dec 2015

George,

some very good pre-production paperwork has been generated for this media project and it is clear you have adhered closely to the process and documented / made changes as the process has developed. Well done, a well organised media project.
There are some pre-production paperwork elements missing and you should review this.

After all this good work, you have failed to submit your written work on the pre-production process.
This is important and without it you will fail this assignment. This becomes a referral at this point and I am setting you a new deadline which is the 11th January 2016. It is vital that you meet this deadline otherwise you will fail this unit.

Get this work completed.

Carl.

Initial Idea's Post

Initial Ideas

To begin with as a group we discussed all of the possible genres that we could potentially base our film around. We also considered which genre of film, we would be able to produce on a budget and that we could create successfully in 90 seconds worth of footage. We created a list of about 10 potential genres that would be suitable, some of these included; horror, comedy, action, adventure and romance. We reduced this list of 10 genres to 3 genres that we could potentially produce, these were horror, comedy and action.
For the horror sequence, we thought about the idea of having a stalker type film. After careful consideration we believed on the budget and the time that we had this would be of a good possibility. On the other hand we looked at the details in regards to the films narrative. We thought that in 90 seconds worth of filming, we would not be able to show a backstory to each of the characters involved and it would not appeal to an audience. There was also another reason as to why we decided that this would not be a suitable selection, was because from previous experiences in film making I personally have found that horror styled films are produced to frequently and so if we continued in planning this we would not have a unique style.

The second story line we considered was to have a comedic styled film, where a young person decides to wait for the rain to stop before they went off to their destination. We believed that this would be a good idea as it allowed us to develop more on the narrative, but also it allowed us to create a unique storyline. We did however find some issues with this idea as due to wanting us to set this in the rain, it would be difficult to establish when it would rain, as we would have to set up immediately. This could present more issues in regards to meeting the deadline and the shot types not being as effective. Although we had this very much in contention of being the final film that we would select we found that it may show some complications. If we find that when we begin to look at making the current film idea that it has more complications than what this sequence does, as a group we may take into consideration of carrying out this project depending on the amount of time that we have remaining to complete everything.

The second comedic styled film that was only briefly considered was to make a parody of a current TV show, taking snippets of the main interviewers and including it in our film, with a comedic storyline. This seemed like an excellent idea for use to carry out, that was until we looked more deeply into the complications that we would entail. For example, if we were to take an extract from a current television programme, due to the production company adding Copyright to their work we would have to get in contact with them to gain their permission for us to use their work. Considering that we have a short amount of time to complete this, getting in contact with the right people may be a lengthily process.

The final idea that we came up with as a group was to have a Chat show styled film. This would be again a comedic genre of film. We picked out many positives from this idea, for example we understood how good the comedic value would be and how successful it would be. Also we found that we could come up with a suitable narrative and storyline which would flow with what is going on screen. The issues that we found that may arise in this could be that we do not have all the supplies to create this and potentially not the budget. Being a very low budget film we do not have anywhere near the budget as to which Hollywood films do. Another complication that we considered that could arise in this is that we are going to make things over complicated for ourselves, for instance the setting in which the film is set and the costumes/masks that we would be required to use. All though we really like the idea of doing this style of film for our 90 second piece of footage, it may be too complicated, and when taking into account the amount of time that we have to complete it.

THE FINAL PROJECT:

After looking at all of our potential ideas, we decided that the best option for us to use from this selection as our 90 second film would be the comedy idea of a character being late because they waited for the rain to stop. This was ironically based upon true events after a member of the group had this happen to them. We believed we can develop on this further and add even more to the comedic value. We decided that we would change some of the storyline but keep the same concept basing it around British weather. After careful planning about how the storyline would pan out and how the different micro features would be included within the different framings, I started off to draft some film titles and after confirming with the group, we decided that our 90 second film would be named ‘Timed to Perfection.’
